Gunnar has owned and operated the Sandwich Cabinet Shop in the rural New Hampshire town of North Sandwich since 1974. He first became interested in Tappan Chairs when his attempts at disassembly to replace broken parts failed miserably. Upon further inquiry into their history and unique construction methods, he decided in the 1980s to revive production. Purchasing the remains of the original equipment and chair patterns which had been locked away in a local garage since 1956, he set about making the necessary jigs, patterns and specialized machines required for their production. It took almost 10 years of stolen time and late nights to rehabilitate the century old machinery and redesign the chairs to fit the present day human frame, adding his own unique models along the way. Today they are still made almost entirely by hand and retain all the durability and classic lines of the originals. |
